Valentine's Day is a day for love, for roses, maybe a box of chocolates and a sweet love note or card. I love Valentine's Day because my favorite is always the Conversation Hearts with the little messages on them. This year they are introducing a new saying "Tweet Me" to keep up with all of the rage that is Twitter. I admit it, I'm hooked too! I was excited to be contacted by a company that I had previously did a review for back in October of last year: We Take the Cake. It is an honor to do a second review for this great company and hopefully you remember from my last review of their delicious and ever so popular Key Lime Bundt Cake. This time the review not only comes with my opinions of the sinfully decadent Red Velvet Cake my with an important message and cause as well. Lori from We Take the Cake contacted my after my first review to set up this special opportunity to blog about this great cause and bring awareness to this disease that plagues so many but one lady in particular. So before I get into the review of this wonderful cake, let me take the time to do just that.
Stomach Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and fourth among women worldwide. Each year nearly 930,000 people worldwide are diagnosed with stomach cancer and approximately 700,000 people die of the disease. Approximately 22,000 Americans will be diagnosed with stomach cancer each year and over 10,000 will die. These are scary statistics but very true.
Debbie's Dream is a non-profit charity dedicated to aggressively and immediately funding innovative, progressive and cutting edge treatment for stomach cancer. Debbie's Dream applies money to grants for stomach cancer research at healthcare, education, and medical research facilities throughout the United States.
Debbie Zelman was diagnosed with stage IV stomach cancer in April of 2008 when she was 40 years old. She is a married mother of three children as well. Her doctors had told her that her cancer was inoperable and incurable and that she would need to undergo chemotherapy for the rest of her life. She was also told that there were very few effective treatments for her advanced stomach cancer as it was an uncommon cancer in the United States and that her chances of being alive in 5 years was less than 5%.
As she began to respond to treatment, Debbie hoped she could make a difference in the treatment options for stomach cancer patients by using her education, experience (she is a lawyer) and contacts in the community. She started Debbie's Dream Foundation in 2009 and it is her dream that with this increased funding more treatments for stomach cancer will become available sooner and a cure will be found. Debbie's Dream Foundation seeks it's ultimate goal to make the cure for stomach cancer a reality and seeks to fund research, facilitate enrollment in clinical trials and help patients and families of those diagnosed with stomach cancer.
This is definitely a great cause to support. I never knew until I read about this just how rare stomach cancer is. We Take The Cake is partnering with Debbie's Dream to provide their customers with a great deal. They are offering not only 10% off of their Delicious Red Velvet Cake, but also another 10% goes to Debbie's Dream to help with the cause of trying to find a cure for stomach cancer.
A quick review of this Red Velvet Cake-This cake is absolutely dreamy! It is a mild chocolate flavored cake decorated with red food coloring to get that beautiful bright red color. They use only the finest ingredients such as buttermilk, vinegar, and imported Dutch cocoa powder.an The frosting is my absolute favorite:cream cheese and the cream cheese frosting is also used in between the layers of the cake as well. Even better is it is adorned with white chocolate sprinkles. This cake is so sweet and an absolute treat, but even though we are all on diets and exercising, we just had to have some of this cake the day it got here. We all enjoyed it immensely and little one was licking her little lips at the frosting. It arrived in a big box and was packed with dry ice to keep it cold and that it was. It was attractively packaged in a bright green and pink box. This cake will delight your family, friends and especially yourself. So good! The We Take the Cake Red Velvet Layer Cake sells for $47.00 and is well worth the money spent. You know too that by buying one or two or three of these cakes that you will be doing your part to help Debbie's Dream Foundation. Thank you in advance for your support!
