My oldest is really starting to love to learn about history. She was really into watching all of the coverage about President Obama and how he was elected. It's hard sometimes to get her excited about anything, but that was something huge for her to pay attention to. She also learns a lot in school when it comes around Martin Luther King day at school. They always have stories that they read and papers that they write. I was excited to be able to review two great and interesting DVD's from Scholastic Storybook Treasures recently:
*So You Want To Be President?-This DVD features 4 great stories in one. So You Want To Be President? is narrated by Stockard Channing and allows us to celebrate American History and learn about the public and private lives of our Presidents. Madam President is about a little girl imagining what her day would be like is she were Madam President. My Senator and Me:A Dog's Eye View of Washington D.C. was written by the late Senator Edward Kennedy and features the Senator and his dog, Splash, inviting children on a typical whirlwind day on Capitol Hill. The last story, I Could Do That! Esther Morris Gets Women the Vote, is the true story of Esther Morris, who started out life believing she could do anything and then proved it. My oldest and I watched these stories together one rainy afternoon and we both really enjoyed them They each have their own way of telling the story and it is brilliantly illustrated as well. I love this DVD because it teaches our children early reading, leadership and history knowledge, which is great for my daughter. Her favorite story was Madam President because she is always running around the house saying what she would do if she was the president, you know the BIG things like making sure everyone had enough Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream and Pizza, stuff like that. I love the imagination of my daughter, but she does know the big things like wanting to make sure that kids her age have books to read and food to eat. This DVD from Scholastic Storybook Treasures really teaches our kids important messages that they need to succeed in their lives and believe me, this one is NO exception. It is an educational, animated and entertaining DVD that your kids will want to watch over and over again and a truly great educational tool that will get them wanting to learn about our Presidents and history.

*March On!-The Day My Brother Martin Changed the World- Another truly wonderful DVD. March On! Also features four stories in one DVD. March On! The Day My Brother Martin Changed the World is narrated by Lynn Whitfield. Martin Luther King Jr.'s sister travels back to 1963 to present a personal, stirring account of the remarkable day when Dr. King delivered his " I Have a Dream" speech. Another fascinating story is Rosa-On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks boarded a Montgomery, Alabama city bus and refused to give up her seat to a white man, an act that ignited a revolution and changed history. Martin's Big Words is narrated by Michael Clark Duncan and is featuring quotes from some of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s beloved speeches. Coming to life in this profound and important biography about beliefs and dreams and following one's heart. The last story is Henry's Freedom Box:A True Story from the Underground Railroad, which is the powerful true story of a young slave who mails himself to freedom. This is a great DVD featuring powerful stories about important events in Black History. This is a must have for your children's DVD collection and one you will enjoy watching and learning from as well. It was released to commemorate the birthday of one of the most prolific and iconic figures in Civil Rights history. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s message comes through in each illustrated story. My oldest daughter and I truly enjoyed watching these stories together.
